Be The Change: How The IF Project Is Rewriting Futures Through Empathy and Action.

In a world often defined by barriers and broken systems, The IF Project stands as a beacon of hope, healing, and transformation. As we celebrate Be Kind 5’s Be The Change Challenge Month, there’s no better time to spotlight this extraordinary organization that is changing lives from the inside out.

Founded on a single, powerful question—“If there was something someone could have said or done to change the path that led you here, what would it have been?”—The IF Project began in 2008 when Seattle Police Detective Kim Bogucki posed this question to incarcerated women at the Washington Corrections Center for Women. What followed was a flood of handwritten essays, stories of pain, resilience, and reflection. These voices became the foundation of a movement that now spans across communities, correctional facilities, and hearts nationwide.

The IF Project is a collaboration between currently and formerly incarcerated individuals, law enforcement, and community partners. Its mission is rooted in holistic intervention, aiming to reduce incarceration and recidivism through truth-telling, empathy, and empowerment

What makes this organization truly unique is its commitment to being led by those with lived experience—people who have walked the path and now guide others toward healing and growth.

Through a wide range of programs, The IF Project offers tools for personal transformation and successful reentry. From expressive writing workshops and reentry planning to health and wellness education, every initiative is designed to meet participants where they are and help them envision a future beyond survival—one where they can thrive.

One of their most impactful initiatives is the WE THRIVE Engagement Center in Seattle’s Central District. This community-centered space provides mentorship, digital access, wellness workshops, and leadership development—all led by formerly incarcerated individuals. It’s a place where justice-involved people are not only supported but celebrated for their courage and potential.

The IF Project doesn’t just change lives—it changes narratives. It challenges society to see beyond the label of “incarcerated” and recognize the humanity, wisdom, and strength within each individual. It invites us all to ask deeper questions, listen more compassionately, and act more boldly.

As we honor BK5’s Be The Change Challenge Month, let’s take inspiration from The IF Project’s unwavering belief in second chances and shared humanity.

Kindness isn’t just a gesture—it’s a revolution. And change doesn’t happen in isolation—it happens when we come together, listen deeply, and lead with love. With gratitude for The If Project for being the change💛
