Wisdom Wednesday: The Coach Who Helped Change My Life

One thing I’ve learned is that you never truly know what a child is experiencing when they leave home each day. Some children carry burdens that no one sees—fear, sadness, uncertainty, or a feeling that they are completely alone. That’s why having just one person who believes in them can make all the difference.

For me, that person was my coach.

There were many times in my youth when I wanted to give up. I felt overwhelmed, discouraged, and unsure of my worth. There were moments when running away from my problems seemed easier than facing them. But my coach saw something in me that I couldn’t see in myself.

He didn’t just teach me the game. He taught me life.

He taught me how to stand strong when things were difficult. He encouraged me to believe in myself when my confidence was gone. He showed me that my circumstances did not define my future and that challenges could become opportunities to grow.

What made the biggest impact wasn’t always the big speeches or life-changing moments. It was the small acts of kindness—the encouraging words, the extra time, the simple question, “How are you doing?” Those small gestures reminded me that someone cared.

Looking back, I can honestly say that my coach is one of the reasons I am here today. His belief in me helped me find belief in myself.

This is why I am passionate about the message of Be Kind 5. We all have the opportunity to be that person for someone else. A coach, teacher, mentor, neighbor, or friend may never fully realize the impact they have on a young person’s life. Sometimes, the smallest effort creates the greatest difference.

So this Wisdom Wednesday, remember: You don’t know what a child is experiencing at home. Be there for them. Listen to them. Encourage them. Believe in them.
