Finding Connection Through Self-Kindness: Meet Joy Walker
At Be Kind 5, we love highlighting people whose work helps others build healthier, more compassionate relationships with themselves and the world around them.
Recently, we had the opportunity to connect with Joy Walker, a Seattle-based somatic practitioner, writer, artist, and creator whose work centers on healing, self-awareness, and meaningful connection.
With more than 25 years of experience in somatic and trauma-informed work, healthcare, counseling, grief support, bodywork, energy work, and caregiver advocacy, Joy brings both professional expertise and lived experience to her practice.
Her journey has been shaped by 34 years of living with an autoimmune illness. Through the challenges of chronic pain, fatigue, disability, and uncertainty, Joy developed a deep understanding of what it means to navigate life in a body that doesn't always cooperate.
Instead of allowing those struggles to define her, she transformed them into an opportunity for growth, learning, and service. Her personal experiences became a catalyst for exploring the powerful connections between the body, nervous system, emotions, trauma, and healing.
Healing Begins with Connection
A central theme of Joy's work is helping people reconnect.
Reconnect with their bodies.
Reconnect with their feelings.
Reconnect with their inner wisdom.
Reconnect with themselves.
Using a collaborative and trauma-informed approach, Joy helps clients explore the relationship between their thoughts, sensations, emotions, and experiences. Her work incorporates somatic awareness, Polyvagal Theory, neuroscience, nervous system regulation, and embodied practices designed to help people feel safer, more connected, and more resilient.
Rather than viewing tension, discomfort, or emotional challenges as something to "fix," Joy invites people to become curious about what their bodies may be communicating.
Introducing the Connections and Perceptions Somatic Coaching Deck
Inspired by years of working with clients and her own personal journey, Joy recently created the Connections and Perceptions Somatic Coaching Deck.
This beautifully designed deck serves as a practical tool for self-reflection, nervous system awareness, and personal growth. It is appropriate for a wide range of ages and can be used individually, with families, in coaching settings, classrooms, support groups, or simply as a daily mindfulness practice.
Each card combines:
Inspiring nature photography captured by Joy over a ten-year period
Thought-provoking prompts and questions
Reflection exercises
Somatic awareness practices
Opportunities to explore thoughts, emotions, sensations, and experiences
The deck encourages people to slow down, tune in, and develop a deeper understanding of themselves in a world that often feels fast-paced and disconnected.
Tools for Everyday Life
What makes Joy's deck especially powerful is its accessibility.
The cards aren't designed to overwhelm or diagnose. They are designed to spark curiosity, encourage reflection, and help people build practical skills for emotional awareness, self-regulation, and self-kindness.
Whether someone is navigating stress, exploring personal growth, strengthening family connections, or simply learning to listen to their body more closely, the deck offers gentle prompts that can support that journey.
In many ways, it aligns beautifully with Be Kind 5's belief that kindness starts with ourselves.
When we become more aware of our thoughts, feelings, and experiences, we are often better equipped to extend compassion to others as well.
A Labor of Love
For Joy, the Connections and Perceptions Deck represents more than a product.
It is an extension of her life's work and her belief in the transformative power of awareness, regulation, embodiment, and self-kindness.
By sharing the practices and insights that have helped both her and her clients, Joy hopes to make these tools accessible to people far beyond her office.
When she's not working, you can find her enjoying time with her husband and daughters, walking along the beach, watching sunsets, reading, journaling, or spending time in the garden.
